You’ll Want to Watch Your Step in The Center

Flooring

Newport A meeting room has hopeful, innovative and a potentially earth-changing carpet solution. The modular square tiles and planks were created from discarded fishing nets. Inspired by a clean ocean, the carpeting comes in three gradations to form a foundation, texture, and transition like the ocean surface. Designers can combine these tiles in multiple shades of blue to mix, match, and create something new. The net effect is a carpeting solution that could reimagine a straight line production model into a circle where what we take from nature gets put back. Newport A answers the question of how we can help our oceans.

For an attractive and practical solution inspired by nature, much of the walked on and worn out berber carpeting in The Center has been replaced with attractive two-toned hickory and pecan interlocking vinyl planks. This classic wood-floor look is easier to maintain and durable for heavy foot traffic. The vinyl is comfortable under foot, easy to install, is completely water resistant and very quiet.

Al Fresco Study Lounge Re-Opens

Ma Atrium

The Student Center and the Ma Family with special guests celebrated the re-opening of the Thomas and Lillian Ma Garden Study Atrium. The open-air lounge is conveniently situated between the Courtyard Study Rooms on one side and the OIT@Student Center computer lab on the other. The atrium is lit by globe string lights, includes a peaceful water feature custom planters and more. The outdoor lounge is a quiet and comfortable reminder of The Center’s focus on learning outside the classroom.

Automatic Faucets and Flushers

Automatic Faucets and Flushers

As drought patterns in California remain unpredictable, The Student Center has now replaced 90% of our faucets and flushers to reduce the amount of water being used. In alignment with UCI’s strategic goal to become more sustainable, these faucets and flushers are expected to reduce water consumption by 70%. In addition to wasting less water, these flushers and faucets are also automatic, thereby increasing sanitation for Student Center guests.

Talking Trash at the Student Center

Zero Waste
To help in the campus-wide initiative for zero waste by 2020, indoor triple-stream recycling stations have been installed throughout the Conference Center. The three bins are color coded black for landfill, green for compost, and blue for recyclables. Each bin is equipped with signage to help with sorting. When items are properly composted or recycled, they can become value resources like energy, soil or turned into new products like aluminum. Recycling existing materials takes 95% less energy than it does to create new materials.
  • Green – Organic waste like banana peels or paper waste soiled with food or liquid should be sorted for compost.
  • Blue – All clean and dry items such as plastic bottles, glass bottles or paper should be recycled.
  • Black – Materials soiled with food or liquids such as ketchup packets, potato chip bags, or coffee cups soiled with liquid should be sorted for landfills. Landfill should always be the last option for your waste.
When wondering what goes where, your food can be composted along with a soiled napkin. The plastic container your food was in goes into the recycling bin if it’s clean and dry. Your plastic utensils would go into the landfill. With this three-bin system, UCI will meet its campus-wide diversion rate goal of 95%.

Lay Waste to Landfills Bigbelly Trash Cans on the Terrace

Big Belly Trash Cans
Newly installed Bigbelly trash cans with convenient foot pedals for handless operation are a visible commitment to sustainability at the Student Center. These smart trash cans use cloud-driven technologies for a real-time management system that improves operational performance and organizational efficiency. Solar-powered sensors measure a can’s capacity and signals a compactor that presses the trash down. This allows each Bigbelly to collect eight times more waste than standard bins. The sensors communicate real-time status to collection crews and sends an email notification to staff that indicates how full they are. Recycling diversion rates can be more accurately measured and have the potential to reduce CO2 emissions and fuel costs by reducing the number of scheduled collections.

Drought-Tolerant Landscapes Taking Root

Landscaping
Ferns native to California along with Pink Muhly grass, French lavender, Sun Drops, and Snowberries were added to the Cross-Cultural Center planter and Peltason Street landscapes. A drip irrigation system was installed and all broken or leaking sprinklers were replaced to conserve water. These low-water solutions are colorful, at times fragrant, and reduce maintenance costs all while adding a visual appeal to The Center.

Student Center Recognized Globally for Innovation of the Year

IACC Award

Marketing Manager Brian Petyo accepts the IACC Americas Innovation award in Philadelphia

Only one year after the International Association of Conference Centres (IACC) recognizes Student Center & Event Services globally as a conference center of excellence, the Student Center wins the first-ever IACC Americas Innovation award. The winner was announced at the IACC Americas Connect award ceremony in Philadelphia. The Student Center was the sole recipient of this year’s award for its Real-Time Ops app designed to enhance staff communications and improve customer service.

The app allows front-line staff to quickly capture and communicate the day’s events. It is easy to install, easy to use, and has never resulted in the need for additional hardware. The app takes full advantage of built-in camera capabilities for attaching photos and voice recognition technology for capturing observations on the go. It also pulls data from our event management system so that incidents or special requests can be billed accordingly.

New Interim Major Events Policy
Effective July 1

Major Events Policy

You are invited to submit comments about the policy until November 30, 2018.

UCI’s Interim Major Events Policy became effective on July 1, 2018. The policy enables sponsors to plan and host successful events on campus and enables UCI to ensure the safety and security of the UCI community and its guests. The policy uses content- and viewpoint-neutral factors to identify events that can benefit from additional planning and sets forth the additional planning steps.

The policy applies to events that are sponsored by non-University parties and that are expected to:

  1. be attended by more than 300 people; or
  2. significantly affect campus safety, security, and/or campus services; or
  3. significantly interfere with other campus functions or activities.

The policy applies to all major events that are planned beginning July 1, 2018.

All affected parties, such as (but not limited to) Registered Campus Organizations and Off-Campus Guests, are invited to submit their comments and concerns to the UCI Campus Policy Coordinator.

Student Center & Event Services strongly advises all parties to carefully review this policy as it may affect your planning process for booking events on campus.

New Look for a New Year
Emerald Hallway and Ballroom Lobby

Emerald HallwayWorkers install Ansel Adams photography in the Emerald Hallway

Guests are welcomed into the Emerald Hallway grand entrance of the Student Center with an all new aesthetic.

We’ve replaced the tired berber carpeting with attractive two-toned hickory and pecan interlocking vinyl planks. This classic wood-floor look is carried throughout the entryway down to the Pacific Ballroom lobby.

The entryway is lined with traditional wainscot in an elegant whisper white to accent a vast expanse of blue silver storm walls trimmed in silver. This palette accentuates the the black and white photography of Ansel Adams—a collection of thirteen images of UC campuses from the sixties with blue matting and silver frames.

The new look is finished with soft white lighting sconces and stylish tall, biconcaved-shaped planters in black.
